Dr. Ellen  Dierenfeld

Dr. Ellen Dierenfeld has been working in the area of Comparative Animal Nutrition for many years. Her interest began with being exposed to wild animals (possums, raccoons, crocodiles (bad choice!), salamanders, turtles and rabbits, together with regular pets (dogs, cats, ducks, chickens) and cattle (pigs and lambs in her kitchen!) as she grew up in Iowa with her dad, who was a livestock veterinarian. She studied Fisheries and Wildlife Biology for a couple of years, then Animal Science during her undergraduate years at the University of Iowa, and more detailed graduation studies in Animal Nutrition at Cornell University (giant pandas for a Master’s Degree project; wombats, kangaroos and rabbits for her PhD). Dr. Dierenfeld headed the Department of Wildlife Nutrition at the Wildlife Conservation Society (based at the Bronx Zoo) for 17 years before moving back to the Midwest and manage the Nutrition Department at the St. Louis Zoo. She spent many years working various posts in the animal and pet feed industry, has undertaken field work on 6 continents, and mentors multiple graduate students globally. She is currently an Honorary Professor at Nottingham Trent University in the UK, CEO of Comparative Nutrition Society, and consults privately with a number of zoos, companies, wildlife organizations and individuals. Her team has developed and managed Zootrition, a record-keeping software, over the past 2 decades, and she has published over 200 research papers in peer-reviewed journals.
